DuckDuckGo: "It's a myth you need to track people to make money in web search"

I thought duckduckgo was meant to be ad free, just used the search to try it out and it has ads just like google woooot

There's a lot of things you don't have to do to make money. But you can also end up leaving a lot of money on the table.

But this is a part of their angle, being privacy-conscious. It's how they survive at all. I'd say that not only can they not give it up but they need to scream it at the top of their lungs about how they care for your privacy. It's the only marketing angle they have, besides their ridiculous name.

DDG is my default SE, but I think I still use google more frequently, but DDG is often accurate enough.

DDG is great and all, but a lot of my content doesn't rank well there. There's way too much spam/low content quality sites at the top.

Problem is, while DDG may be privacy focused, once click on a serp result and you're on a site using GA or some other software to track you, drop cookies, etc.

Just not a fan overall. I'm trying but it's uncomfortable.

I would use it all the time if I could ever find what I was looking for with it :wonder:

To be honest, I liked google ads more when they were NOT tailored to me.

Thing is, when I look at a site about motorbikes, I might want to click on a related ad.
All I get is programming IDEs, server hosting, etc... cause that is what I look at during my 9-5.

DDG is literally then worst search engine i have ever used. Thought I'd try it for a few days and I will never use it again

@Janiform TIL!

I imagine the audience of people using DDG are like the opposite of people that use yahoo for search... DDG probably has a really savvy user base compared to the typical search engine. I wonder what kind of offers work best with an internet-savvy crowd. VPN comparaison affiliate site?

What annoys me is that it's simply catering to the highest bidder who installed tracking, versus fulfilling it's role of interest based advertising.

I saw a truck on the road the other day with a 4 letter domain that made sense, and when I got home I wanted to see how they built the site. I figure if they have a sensible non-radio station 4 letter domain, it's gonna be dope. It was. So is their Adwords work, because I now see it everywhere non-stop. I'm not remotely interested in the service.

Same with the 2nd highest bidder. I've already purchased the service, which is a one time per buyer kind of thing. But now I'm having to see the ad for forever unless I delete my cookies or go hunt for that specific cookie, neither of which I want to do.

It's got nothing to do with interest. Just pushing the highest paying clicks wherever they can reasonably get away with it.
