One of my new hobbies is a niche that could use a good authority site. Most of the "authority" sites are actually retailers and even then aren't information authorities. I see an opportunity to bring valuable knowledge to the market and connect with retailers who have affiliate programs.

This will be my first affiliate/MFA site so I have no experience other than web design/css/seo. I've been one of those people just reading up on all sorts of crap affiliate marketing blog after blog sometimes finding good stuff. My biggest block has been finding a "niche".

A keyword planner search shows 90k/mo for the main niche keyword with low competition and low $ CTR. My concern is the low competition here, and potentially the search amount. I have no idea what's a good amount in this case and if I even need to care about the competition. Basic search results only show retailers.

Haven't looked at long tail potential but I have 70+ article ideas (guides, reviews etc) so content-wise I'm feeling pretty confident. I found at least one site that does something along the lines of what I have in mind but it does it poorly and I can definitely setup something strong.

Any tips for a newb before I start writing content and building the site? Maybe dissuade me from getting in the niche because it's crap? Something in particular I should look out for?

Just a quick heads up: Low competition could be referring to competition from the advertiser's side, meaning not a lot of people are bidding on that KW, rather than meaning that not a lot of people are trying to rank for it.

My best tip is just to start and to not get dissuaded. You can PM me the niche if you'd like and I can give you some more specific thoughts and guidance. There's volume, there should be some long tails, so there's money to be made. The only way to sharpen your sword is by just getting in there and building something - with that mindset, it's impossible to fail because you're learning as you go.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking that it's advertiser competition, but I've heard that having high advertiser competition for a niche can be better since there will be people with ads to share. That's a concern for me. Can't PM you yet, guess I'm 2noob2pm, but I will as soon as I can  Would love to get some guidance on this.

I agree with @MetaData ...

Just get started and you'll see how far you can go with this, honestly f**k the SEO for now. You have the right idea, you see a gap in the market, you think you can do it better... Spend all your time focusing on your strengths and your competitors weaknesses.

It'll separate you from the pack, help you build a loyal following faster all because you're differentiating yourself, polarizing your market in doing so (hopefully) and giving people what they want.

Of course you will be focusing on matching, if not even exceeding what your competitors are doing right and that's where some aspects of the research will come in.

So my honest thoughts on this or any project you want to do is forget the SEO... Research like a marketer, see some of @CCarter ' posts on how you approach this. It's good news there are searches there though... 90k is probably pretty broad and won't be the most commercially valuable keyword you can find. So keep digging there.

Nonetheless if everything looks good, just get started and focus on getting traffic the easy way, because we all know SEO takes more time and a lot more money than knowing your audience and tapping into where they are and getting them onto your site. Concentrating hard on SEO can come later and probably should!

google your keywords ad if ads show up (that is relatively targeted) towards the kewogfor it, the more ads on google the better.

when creating the site at lest do basic onsite seo like interlinging pages/posts and try to do a silo structure, then do the traffic leaking thing and if you want to do more offpage seo/linkbuilding you can always come back and do it, besides if you put uo great content that has true value for your audience, the links will start to flow naturally to your site, maybe consider setting up a content locker at the end of your pages/posts telling people to share before they can read the last bit.
