Introductions Thread

Welcome to the forum. Will you be sticking with construction or trying something new?

Welcome Martin.

I think this forum'll be a good fit for you. My advice for you is to utilize what you've got, if you're not doing it already, doing lead gen in shoulder niches to construction would be good. It'll help you save time / money and speed up your time to ROI.

I think you might be jumping at shadows, Id recommend checking the top 2 or 3 sites in the niche and look at how many pages they have indexed and then also check the trust flow and citation flow on those top sites. Then check your sites, I think you will find your metrics are below theirs.

There could be one of a number of things but on page 2 I dont think you are sandboxed or even close, people over think this stuff, just keep going, keep doing what you are doing and keep adding links and content

What's up BuSo,

My name is Jedediah - I am an affiliate marketer, and I own a content service. My attention was brought to the forum by Charles Floate who shouted me in his post, and this is looking like a great place to be!

I'm all about scale and have formal PM training and love talking about all aspects of building sites, growing a business and making money. Hopefully, I can help some folks out with some insights, and learn some things along the way.

I decided to do an intro post after seeing someone else make one, it seemed like a good idea. I didnt think to make one myself as I am not really a forum person and I usually work alone and dont really spend too long on forums, I thought networking would be a good idea.

Ive been into affiliate marketing since around 2005 and have made a full time living since then but have had a lot of up and downs. I also have been doing a little client SEO and have build relationships with some large UK based agencies where I have acted as an overage resource for them, basically I find a lot of agencies are not actually that skilled in SEO and ranking, they just repeat to clients what they have read on "expert" blogs but have never actually tested anything for themselves.

Im doing really well with youtube at the moment and just sort of drift from one thing to the next as I get board or find something else that is working. I foucs only on what works and what makes money I dont care if google calls it whitehat/blackhat or just ridiculous.

It's "thehobbster". Get it right or pay the price. (Although I do somewhat resemble a hobbit.)

Welcome to the club.

I'm not remotely surprised by this. The same goes for most guru and persona-branded entities as well. It's easier to make a sale to an uneducated and eager buyer than it is to actually know what you're doing. They'll accept mediocre work and "everyone" "wins". Then they outsource to you for the real impact.

I really want to get into this for my main project but it's going to be one of those last-priorities. It's not the needle mover but why not take an extra $500, $1k, $10k+ a month from YouTube if you can leverage your existing brand to seed the views, retention, and likes and let the organic rankings take it from there.

Glad to have you aboard!

Are your sites doing as well as the link selling? I've done more than dabble in link selling and it was a monstrous cash flow but a pain in the butt to maintain. It's not something I'm interested in doing again now that I broke free from it. I'd rather do a site design for one-off cash than manage tons of buyers again. Although it got a lot easier when I outpriced the cheap and headache-creating buyers.

Welcome aboard the BuSo cruise liner! Refreshments are to the left and there's an open bar courtesy of @Nat. He's paying so drink up!

What kind of traffic and monetization are you working with, or rather what's your preference?

Hey guys, just happened to stumble on buildersociety. Been doing SEO work for ages, but usually for in-house for companies. Hope to catch some good information and conversations here.

Do you have any of your own projects going? Have you had any significant success of your own, outside of the agency?

Welcome aboard.

Hi guys just a quick intro to say hi and this looks like a very interesting and helpful place!

I saw Charles Floate speak about this place on FB but it took me a while to visit because I thought it was actually about builders (the house building kind)

Anyway nice to meet you all and look I look forward to getting and giving some good tips!

I will probably stick within construction as I know quite a lot about it, as I have been in construction for the last 20 years.....but in the future I might move on to other things, but for now the niche will be construction.

Thanks RF, I agree, I set a page up the other week on one of my sites and getting over 600 visits a month for people looking for the cost of a construction related task, so I'm going to take it from there.

Good luck with your JV your doing with Charles, I'm eager to see how you get on with it.

Were you the guy on wickedfire that wouldnt touch frameworks and hated anything not PHP?

Hi all - just wanted to do a quick intro.

I've been doing IM in one form or another for a few years, starting with SEO back before Panda and Penguin and then moving onto affiliate marketing using paid traffic sources. I got sick of churning out affiliate campaigns last year and decided to start building affiliate websites (but much higher quality than my previous efforts) that were genuine assets.

Looking forward to meeting everyone and getting involved in some threads!

Hey alex,
welcome on board. I'm sure that you will find some value at this place.
Did you also create your own products or just did the arbitrage game? Are you incorporating paid traffic channels into your new affiliate sites?
Aff Marketing with paid traffic can be a huge pain in the ass when it comes to churn

Do you want me to touch on every programming controversy I've had on Wickedfire? Shit going to get deep real fast. I actively hated on OO programming, was wrong on that one I write and love OO. I hated Ruby, I would flame dchuck for it, still hate it and think it's a hipster language. I hated emacs & vim users, still do but whatever floats your boats guys I'm not going to flame you for it. I did hate PHP for a while there but did actively freelance work for it, the latest release actually looks really good. Wouldn't be surprise if I started working with it again. What haven't I made an ass of myself for?

So about me - highly opinionated British SEO business owner in my 30s with a wife, mortgage, cat and a half dozen SEO clients that pay the bills each month.

Looking to start developing my own long term brands to slowly replace clients.

After reading a lot of good things about this place and hearing that there are some pretty knowledgeable dudes here I thought I'd sign up, if only to lurk in the shadows initially.

Pretty excited (and this isn't meant as an insult) as unlike other forums, it looks like there are people here who want to put in work, grow build businesses an it's not full of kids and keyboard warriors.

Hello!
I found my way here in a roundabout way, but I am glad I did. I have five rank and rent sites that i am working on, and I have picked up a few tips that will help in my endeavor.
I just wanted to thank everyone for all of the good information!

Welcome to the Resistance!

One thing we are attempting to do here is keep the signal-to-noise ratio low by culling out 'one-liners' and activity that creates a poisonous atmosphere here. We encourage discourse but stifle problematic behavior that would eventually result in the erosion of the resistance.

In my opinion long term assets versus client work is always the way to go. Less headaches and more fun working on projects you want to work on rather than taking late night calls about whatever. About 3 years ago I got out of my marketing agency and left it to my business partner and just decided enough was enough - jumped into programming my own stuff and the rest is history. The differences was night and day.

If you have any questions feel free to ask, or if you want to help out don't feel shy to drop your own knowledge and input into conversation!

Viva La Resistance!

Are you seeing any success with your five sites? Rank & Rent is an interesting model. Seems like something as silly as ranking locally for Chinese Restaurants could bring in steady cash flow.

Ugh... grass always looks greener on the other side :wonder:. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

These sites also fascinate me. OP, I'd love to hear more .

Sorry on the delay in response! Typically I work with organic traffic, though I have been dabbling in social traffic, mainly via instagram. Monetization wise, I stick to product based affiliate marketing.

Thanks Carter.

Yeah, I've had a few of those late night phone calls from clients who obsess over each and every ranking movement and recently it's made me feel like I'm working a 9/5 again.

Anyway, I'm feeling pretty pumped after reading some of the big case studies here.

Hey Guys, glad to have found this great forum, already been through a ton of great posts and information.

I'm from the UK and have been doing SEO/Affiliate marketing since 2007, jumped from SEO to PPC after different google updates and finally got wiped out in 2011 thanks to a top resource at the time called 'Build my Rank' (anyone use this) which lead to the first big manual google penalty and destroyed my sites overnight!

Decided now was a good time to get back into it and build proper foundations this time! lol
