You mentioned dropping Amazon links around and eventually getting a check. Where did you place those links?

If it's on a site and domain you own, then that might be a good place to start. It has leverage and is ranking somewhat. Also, I'd go into your Amazon account and whitelist the domain. They make you agree that each site you promote on doesn't promote to children 13 or under. I think you can only do your own domain, web 2.0, or Facebook page. I'm saying that in case you posted those links any where else. I'd hate to see you catch a ban in the future over some old activity.

What kind of projects are you thinking about building?
 
I'm pretty sure most of the amazon links were thrown in comments sections in articles or on forum posts? I found a few amzn.to links in my disqus history.

I've got 3 project ideas to start. The domain/wordpress I'm working on today is for the first one.
  1. Amazon Affiliates short content site? Something like thisiswhyimbroke.... different spin on the listings though? Something where creating posts is really simple and I can spam out a bunch of posts for some obscure search terms? A quantity over quality site.
  2. Large topic site... something that I'm naturally interested in, Technology, Maker Topics (woodworking, 3d printing, cnc, etc), Paintball, etc... Build it for the long haul, an authority site of sorts. A quality, built over time, site.
  3. My uncle owns a autoglass shop in the area I live in.. he doesn't have a website, i'm planning on spending some time creating a simple webpage and trying to get it ranked for local SEO, mostly as a learning exercise.

Since you mentioned thisiswhyimbroke, check out the AMA the founder did on Reddit a while back. Lots of good info in it.

Local is such a great opportunity sometimes, because the competition is asleep, I'd do a deal with him upfront, because you're about to make him a good chunk of change assuming he runs a good operation.

Yeah... I hear local is a lot easier to work with, figured it was a great place to start learning. I'm not too worried about getting a deal done with my uncle. He's been good to me, hasn't ever charged me for a windshield and installed new windows for my house, only charged me for the windows. I'd feel good about bringing more business to him for freezy

I'd hit the #3 hard maybe partner up with him to take a % of rev instead of flat rates that might be better. Tons of content in the case studies that reference this.

First, sorry if you make a mistake in grammar, usually speak Portuguese :smile:

I found the forum through the interview Lion Zeal talking to Yashar, and found it very interesting. I wish to share my plan to create an empire in SEO.

Studying SEO for about 6 months, I made an affiliate project that earned me 10 sales, around R$ 200 in a month. It's a small money, but then I knew that the thing really works and I decided to throw my head in it. I resigned from my miserable job and now I have free time to do freelance and study / apply the knowledge in SEO will acquire.

I already have some income to pay my rent, and I will work with content creation and design (I already have experience of it) to fund testing in SEO. If someone has been there, I wonder what were the problems, grips and interesting things that lived in this professional adaptation phase :smile:

In regards to SEO challenges, don't you worry you will in time face them all. With little determination and tenacity, I'm sure you will overcome each one of them :wink:
 
My man, if Jose Aldo can fight his way out of the favelas to become the greatest featherweight champion of all time, you can definitely kill it at SEO. Looking forward to following along!

Hey everyone, I thought I should introduce myself around here since I plan I making a stay.

I'm about 5 weeks off of finishing my uni degree - bachelors of IT and I'm starting now to prepare myself for the the long road ahead of self-employment.

Studying IT, I've obviously got a keen interest for tech. I've made trickles of cash in my teenage years online, nothing worth mentioning here. Always had a deep interest for coding but haven't gotten very far with it yet (unis aren't great for teaching you how to code and never had the chance to self learn).

My first huge mistake, probably like a million others, was I chose a niche I couldn't give two shits about. That was my first 'aha' moment here that snagged me in (well done). Lots of wasted money on that project but meh, shit happens, now I'm working something I understand well and using that to my advantage.

Happy to say though I will be staying around here and chiming in where I can. It is a definite change of pace from the garbage on BHW and brilliant to see the marketing side of things which I admit I lack enormously.

For sure. SEO in isolation, spamming links, building gigantic database sites... all of this stuff is for the lazy who don't want to engage in marketing. Not because it's hard, but because it seems like a shortcut. Why deal with creativity and actual people (the ones with the actual money) if you don't have to? Except those days are long gone.

There are definitely two crowning skill sets for internet marketing when flying solo. One is being able to work with tech, which you can do. You'll fill in coding gaps along the way as they pop up (the answer is always one stackoverflow away). The other skill is marketing. Ignore it and doom yourself to never really getting off the ground the way you could have.

There's always exceptions to the rule. But why bank on low probability when you can add in marketing and almost guarantee success. That's where you get the real social media attention, the big links from top 100 publishers, etc. Real people run the real sites, and the easier you make it for them, the more likely they'll hook you up.

They don't want to think and be creative either and they have crazy deadlines constantly. Produce amazing content and get it in front of as many eyeballs as you can and the off-page SEO almost takes care of itself.

Don't get greedy and don't be lazy. If you want to play around like that (and you can learn a lot from doing it) make sure you isolate those activities from your main, precious money sites.

Commit to a long-term plan and start thinking in the year-to-year basis rather than month-to-month, especially if you're going to be spending a good portion of your time and money on trying to get traffic from search engines.

Make use of all the brains and resources here, it's gonna make your journey a lot easier than otherwise.

Welcome, another aussie here (although from the uk originally), based in Sydney.
This is one of the best, if not the best forum on the net for online business . Adsorb the delicious mental juices these top marketers have to offer.

Learning by doing, I've got a few spammy money makers but I know they wont last. But they teach me and I can use the money for more wholesome things. Building sustainable, saleable assets is where it's at...real business.
Just doing things and learning along the way, you just need to test and feel what is right for you.

I am Jay from Germany. I found out about the BuilderSociety via another forum. This looks like the perfect place for someone with big ambition.

A little about me:
- former poker pro that dabbled in online marketing on and off since a couple years
- build some MFA sites back in the day but the websites are obv not cashflowing anymore
- have a little e-commerce store with imported products that I am trying to build up atm

I am looking forward to become a part of the community.

Welcome aboard, Jay. eCommerce is fun. It was one of the first attempts I made online at making cash in the late 90's. I ordered my own products and sold them by marketing myself in forums, eventually started my own forum too. I only stocked about 5 products. I consider it a success.

What's the scale of your operation? Do you have a billion products? How are you promoting the site? Any content marketing like a blog or other resources?

It's super small at the moment. I just launched like 2 weeks ago.
I have about 10 products right now. The products are for a very small niche so I will not make a lot of money with it. But I am the first e-commerce store to concentrate just on this product line which gives me a nice and easy USP.

While this e-commerce store won't make me rich it has the potential for a decent cashflow. The cool thing is that there is some SE traffic for the products but it's also a product that can be sold via ads as an impulse buy so I can use a lot of marketing channels (which is already a great learning experience).

So far all my sales come from paid traffic -> Facebook Ads, Adwords & Google Shopping however I am not making a lot of profit from the paid traffic. ATM I am just break even on most days or making a small profit.
However I have still a lot to learn about paid traffic and CRO, there are also some possibilities for upsells and crossells. So the paid traffic could likely become profitable as I am getting better with time.

One thing that I haven't done yet and what I am absolutely looking forward to is Seo. Getting sales from free organic traffic would be fantastic (it sucks to loose all the profit margin to paid traffic) and since it's a very niche product and I am the only e-commerce store that is specializing in it, it should be very possible to get good rankings.
